The 1967 24 Hours of Daytona race saw a fierce battle between the best of American and European sports racing cars. Although the Europeans ultimately triumphed, taking the top three places, the mighty Ford MKIIs put up fierce resistance on home soil. Foyt and Gurney's car qualified on pole position before retiring due to a broken connecting rod. But the Americans didn't just rely on the powerful Fords; the powerful Chaparral, equipped with a wing, was also in contention, in second position on the grid, alongside the more conventional 2D.
But for the Americans, this was not to be their day. The powerful V12 engines in the red cars entered by the Europeans proved to be the class apart of the field, with the Spyder convertible emerging as the winner, followed by two other red V12s. It was a dominant performance, but one that was not going to be repeated. American cars, this time the powerful Ford MKIVs, triumphed at Sebring and Le Mans.
