Test HPI Stage-D24 : Le Drift RWD 1/24 Prêt à Glisser

HPI Course D24 Toyota Supra: The drift 1/24-scale RC car

The drift radio-controlled model is undoubtedly one of the most demanding and rewarding disciplines in model building. Long reserved for 1/10 scale models with expensive chassis that were complex to tune, precision drifting is now making its way into smaller spaces. With the HPI Stage-D24, the legendary manufacturer offers an authentic drift rear-wheel-drive (RWD) car in 1/24 scale, delivered 100% ready to run (RTR).

Featuring a stunning, officially licensed body based on the Toyota GR Supra, this micro-On-road packs all the technical expertise needed to execute superb, controlled sideways drifts in your living room or on a smooth On-road surface. A detailed look at this new drifting model.

A model-style finish with a magnetic body

The first visual impression of the HPI Stage-D24 Toyota Supra is sure to make an impression. Available in two colors (red or blue), the rigid body features a level of finish worthy of a display model. The headlight assemblies are finely detailed and come standard with functional front and rear LED lighting for striking realism when cornering.

To preserve these sleek lines without unsightly holes, HPI opted for a magnetic attachment system. The body clips on and off in a fraction of a second, greatly facilitating access to the battery and electronic components.

Rear Mechanism: Rigid Spool and T-Bar Suspension

To drift cleanly with rear-wheel drive, the design of the drivetrain is crucial. HPI has implemented a compact three-gear transmission driven by a brushed with 37 turns, securely mounted on a 3-mm-thick orange anodized aluminum plate—a signature element of the brand’s identity.

Gone is the open differential: the Stage-D24 features a rigid spool (locked axle), essential for locking the rear axle and inducing a drift as soon as the throttle is opened. Drive is then transmitted to the wheels via genuine metal constant-velocity (CVD) driveshafts.

Another notable feature is its rear suspension, which is hinged around a T-bar. This concept, proven in micro-chassis applications, allows the rear axle to operate through controlled flex while maintaining a very low center of gravity. By changing the material or thickness of this bar, experienced drivers can fine-tune the rear axle’s stiffness according to the desired level of traction.

Front suspension: 67.5° steering angle and adjustable geometry

The secret to a successful drift lies in the ability to countersteer aggressively to maintain a slide without spinning out. In this regard, the Stage-D24 impresses with a maximum steering angle of up to 67.5°!

The front suspension features independent suspension with adjustable steering links. This design offers excellent steering precision, allowing you to position the car with millimeter accuracy when entering a turn and to quickly regain the desired line during rapid weight transfers.

4-in-1 electronics with built-in gyroscope

Driving a drift RWD car without small-scale assistance is a real challenge. HPI simplifies the learning process thanks to the SRL-805 centralized electronic module. This ultra-compact unit combines the following into a single component:

  • The adjustable electronic gyroscope, which automatically manages countersteering in real time to stabilize the car during a drift;
  • The ESC electronic speed controller (ESC);
  • The 2.4 GHz radio receiver;
  • The LED lighting controller.

Power is supplied by an included 2S LiPo battery (7.4 V, 360 mAh), along with its USB charger featuring balancing. The package provides a perfect balance between performance and runtime, allowing you to string together runs on thin carpet, hardwood floors, or polished concrete.

RC Team’s Review
