In the world of precision micro-model building, the Mini-Z is a true institution. For more than ten years, the MR-03 platform has dominated tracks around the world, from hobbyist shows to international championships. However, to reach a new level of dynamic efficiency, Kyosho undertook a thorough redesign of its rear-wheel-drive chassis with the introduction of the Kyosho Mini-Z MR-04.
While the visual resemblance remains obvious at first glance, the internal modifications radically transform the handling of the On-road. Details on mechanical upgrades, geometric innovations, and a guide to installing must-have options.
An Even Lower Center of Gravity
One of the priorities during the development of the MR-04 chassis was optimizing weight distribution. Like its predecessor, the car is powered by four rechargeable AAA batteries. However, the engineers at Kyosho redesigned the battery cradle layout to lower the position of the batteries as close as possible to the running surface.
This lower center of gravity provides an immediate benefit from the very first laps of the On-road: the car rolls significantly less through rapid sequences of turns, maintains a flatter ride, and allows for higher cornering speeds without unexpected loss of traction.
Front Suspension and Steering Geometry: A Leap Forward
It is undoubtedly in the front suspension where the MR-04 stands out most clearly from the previous generation. Kyosho introduced several key improvements:
- New steering knuckles with integrated kingpins: The assembly is stiffer and eliminates unwanted play, resulting in much more direct steering.
- Reduced scrub radius: The offset between the wheel’s pivot axis and its point of contact with the ground has been reduced by 1.5 millimeters on each side. At a scale of 1/27 or 1/28, this is a significant change: it results in smoother, more predictable, and perfectly linear steering at the beginning of a turn.
- Optimized dynamic toe and camber: The control arm geometry has been modified to maintain optimal tire tread contact area when cornering.
- 3-mm front bearings: The use of ball bearings with an inner diameter of 3 millimeters reduces mechanical friction, resulting in a more responsive front suspension.
Rear-wheel drive available in the Readyset version
For the rear axle, Kyosho has opted for continuity in its ready-to-drive versions (Readyset). It features reliable, proven mechanics: a rear-wheel-drive system powered by a brushed Type 130 motor and a robust gear differential.
This approach delivers a very modern and ultra-precise platform, while retaining a familiar, progressive, and easy-to-handle drivetrain for fans of rear-wheel-drive driving.
Installing a Gyro and an LED Kit: Our Tips
To customize and optimize your MR-04, two very popular options can be easily installed on the chassis:
1. Installing the electronic gyroscope
The chassis has a dedicated slot where the gyro module fits directly, before being connected to the corresponding connector on the electronic board.
Setup tip: On a Mini-Z rear-wheel-drive model, avoid setting the gyro’s assistance to the maximum. Too high a gain results in a vague steering feel and prevents the rear end from turning naturally through corners. It’s best to start with a low assist setting, then increase it gradually based on how it feels and the On-road’s grip level.
2. The LED Lighting Kit
Plugged directly into the dedicated socket on the onboard electronics, the wiring harness routes the LEDs to the front (white LEDs) and rear (red LEDs) lights. If your body features compatible translucent light housings, this option adds a superb touch of visual immersion during track sessions.
RC Team’s Review
With the MR-04, Kyosho brilliantly modernizes its signature design. The refined front-end handling and enhanced cornering stability deliver an even more precise driving experience than the MR-03, making this new platform the benchmark for model racing on carpet or specialized track tiles.
