Radiocommande RC : Les 5 réglages indispensables pour mieux piloter

As the true control center of your radio-controlled car, the remote control does much more than just manage throttle and steering. Too often mistakenly viewed as equipment reserved solely for competitors, the programmable remote with a display is, in fact, one of the best investments for recreational use. It offers precision, driving comfort, and mechanical reliability that you’ll quickly find hard to do without.

Whether you’re still using the factory settings on your RTR model or have just invested in a new transmitter for the 2026 season, here are the 5 essential settings you need to master to unlock your vehicle’s full potential and prevent damage.

Creating and Managing Models in Memory

One of the biggest advantages of a programmable radio control system is its internal memory. Rather than having a separate transmitter for each vehicle, you can save multiple models (cars, crawlers, trucks) on a single transmitter.

Each profile saves your car’s custom name along with all its specific settings (trims, channel reversals, travel limits). When you switch vehicles on the track, simply select the corresponding profile to instantly retrieve your custom settings.

Sub-Trim: Perfect Mechanical Alignment

After assembling a kit or replacing a steering servo, the steering linkage is rarely perfectly perpendicular. Since the servo head is notched, precise mechanical alignment is sometimes impossible.

This is where Sub-Trim comes in. Unlike conventional trim, which is accessed via the radio’s buttons, Sub-Trim is adjusted electronically through the menu. It allows you to align the steering or the carburetor (on model Nitro) to the absolute neutral point before any use, without shifting the servo’s overall travel.

EPA (End Point Adjustment): The End-of-Travel Setting That Saves Your Servos

If there were only one setting to remember to prevent damage, it would be the EPA (End Point Adjustment). When a car is turned to the limit, the servo sometimes continues to push even though the steering links or shims have already reached their mechanical limit. The result: the servo overdrives, heats up in a matter of seconds, and eventually burns out or breaks its gears.

By adjusting the EPA (independently for left and right), you set the exact limit at which the servo must stop pushing. On a Nitro model, the EPA also prevents the servo from overloading the carburetor throttle valve or the brake linkages. It’s a lifeline for your electronics!

Dual Rate (D/R): Adjusting Travel to the Terrain

Dual Rate acts as a global ESC for the maximum steering angle. Typically accessed via a quick-adjust knob or a switch on the steering wheel, it allows you to instantly reduce or increase the maximum steering angle.

This is an ideal feature for adjusting the car’s handling while driving. On a very fast track or one with low traction, slightly reducing the Dual Rate makes the vehicle much less twitchy and prevents spins. Conversely, on a very twisty track, increasing the steering travel restores the agility needed to navigate tight hairpin turns.

Exponential (EXP): Smoothness Around the Neutral Point

The Exponential setting modifies the response curve of the controls. By applying a negative or positive value—depending on the brand—you make the steering (or throttle) much smoother and more gradual around the neutral point, while retaining 100% of the maximum travel at the end of the range.

This setting is particularly useful for stabilizing a vehicle at high speeds in a straight line without sacrificing its ability to turn sharply in corners. Be careful not to overdo it, however (a value of 10% to 20% is generally ideal) to maintain a natural driving feel.

Advanced Features You Should Know

Once you’ve mastered these five basics, programmable transmitters offer other very practical options to fine-tune your experience:

  • Fail-Safe: An essential safety feature that sets the automatic position of the servos in the event of a loss of radio signal or low battery. Generally, it is set to return the steering to neutral and apply light emergency braking.
  • Servo Speed: Allows you to electronically slow down the steering response. A valuable feature for smoother handling on surfaces with very low traction.
  • Mixing: Useful for combining two channels. They’re commonly found on Crawler (to control two independent motors or four-wheel steering) and on 1/5-scale chassis (to distribute braking between the front and rear axles).

What about transmitters without a screen?

Good news: if your transmitter doesn’t have a screen digital, most of the essential functions (Trims, EPA, and Dual Rate) are still accessible via manual rotary knobs located on the top or side of the unit.

Taking the time to properly configure your transmitter is key to preserving its mechanical components, improving consistency, and getting the most enjoyment out of your On-road.
