Comment choisir mon Crawler ?

Among the many car models available in RC modeling, crawlers are currently the most popular. With impressive off-road capabilities and an impressive number of options, chassis configurations, parts, and customizationaccessories, it's easy to understand why they are so popular. A buyer's guide is essential, which is why we will detail all aspects of crawling in this article.

What is a Crawler?

Crawlers are relatively slow RC vehicles designed to overcome obstacles and rough terrain that other cars cannot navigate. Over the years, the crawler has become one of the most popular cars in the world of RC model cars. Crawlers have become very diverse and include "Scale Crawlers," "Technical Crawlers," and "Rock Racers."

These are perfect vehicles for drivers who prefer to go on outdoor adventures on rocky and difficult terrain.

The different types of Crawler

Le Scale Crawler

The Scale Crawlers focus on aesthetics. These are magnificent scale models, extremely detailed and realistic. The proportions and size of the wheels are similar to those of full-size off-road vehicles such as 4x4s. In short, these are real motorized models designed to be driven outdoors on uneven terrain!

Technical Crawler

Technical Crawler vehicles are relatively slow and highly technical, specializing in overcoming obstacles. Often equipped with monster wheels, they are perfect for tackling the most difficult terrain and taking on any challenge.

The Race Crawler

Race Crawlers are built for competition and racing. They are designed to deliver maximum power while overcoming most obstacles. These are the off-road vehicles of expert drivers

Features of the Crawler

The engine

You'll need a good engine to overcome all types of obstacles. Crawlers are generally equipped with a brushed motor so that they can use the engine brake and because they provide more torque. One of the few combo motors brushless is the Hobbywing Combo Xerun Axe.
The motor usually comes with two gears, a Gear and a Spur gear. The gears are different sizes to improve the engine's torque; the larger the Spur gear, the more torque the engine will have.

Ground clearance

Ground clearance

corresponds to the height of the chassis. As the crawler is an off-road vehicle, it is generally higher than other models so that your chassis does not come into contact with the ground. However, if the ground clearance is too high, the crawler may tip over when crossing obstacles. Therefore, the crawler requires perfect ground clearance balance.

Tires and rims

The tires on the crawler are large compared to other models car the larger the diameter of a tire, the greater its ability to overcome obstacles. They are flexible with deep treads. In addition, the tires and rims are glued together to withstand the stresses of rock. The most common rim sizes are 1.9" (the most realistic size) for scale and 2.2" (more effective but less aesthetic) for other models.

Suspension

Crawlers have flexible suspensions to keep them stable and the tires in contact with the ground when crossing obstacles. For improved durability, you may want to consider purchasing aluminum shock absorbers.

Steering servo

Crawlers require a high-torque, waterproof steering servo. Any servo with a torque of 20 to 30 kg should be suitable for regular use.

Drive wheels

Crawlers are only available with four-wheel drive (4WD) car as they offer better traction.

Differentials

Crawlers are also excellent off-road vehicles car the differentials are locked, which prevents slippage and increases traction and crossing capabilities. Some models are even more versatile car they behave like conventional off-road vehicles, but the differentials can be locked remotely when needed, such as the Traxxas TRX-4.

What are the best crawlers for beginners?

The SCX10 II and Ascender Crawlers are excellent for beginners, with amazing performance on all surfaces, and are available in RTR versions, i.e., already assembled and complete. Axial and Vaterra offer many parts to customize, upgrade, or repair them. The Redcat Everest 10 is very powerful and can be upgraded to become an excellent little truck.

There are many other crawlers for beginners, such as the TRX-4 from Traxxas, the Komodo de Gmade, the Wraith and Bomber from Axial, and more!
