The Kübelwagen Type 82 was a light military vehicle designed by Ferdinand Porsche and built by Volkswagen during World War I for military use. It was the AXIS equivalent of the "Jeep", although the production of over 50,000 examples which ended in 1945 was much lower than that of its famous Allied counterpart (over 650,000) .
Simple, reliable, robust, with good off-road performance , inexpensive and designed for mass production, the Volkswagen Kübelwagen was a liaison, staff, reconnaissance vehicle and a versatile utility on the battlefield .
The Kübelwagen was simplicity itself. With a powerful two-wheel drive configuration to tackle snow, ice and mud, the prowess of this vehicle surprised even its creators. In some tests, it even showed better handling than some 4x4s. This was due to the combination of a lightweight chassis and a smooth, flat underbody that "surfed" on soft surfaces like a motorized sled, allowing it to keep up with tracked vehicles without much trouble.
The Kübelwagen could reach a top speed of around 80 km/h thanks to its 985 cc 4-cylinder engine and had a self-locking differential to maintain good traction in all circumstances. Thanks to an integrated cooling system , it did not need a radiator and was therefore less vulnerable to bullets, while being very tolerant of hot and cold climates.
After presenting the Allied Jeep, it was only right to offer the equivalent of the AX in the form of a Kübelwagen Type 82 in 1/12 scale. The rear-mounted, air-cooled engine has been faithfully recreated to reflect the original, an engine that lasted 65 years in the classic VW Beetle and whose production finally ended in Mexico in 2003. Everything is restored in the 1/12 model, so you can observe the blades spinning in the fan when the engine is running. On the RC model, ROC Hobby designed a 2- speed gear shift to simulate the 1st and 3rd gear speeds of the real car. It is possible to switch between 4WD and RWD modes . This function of changing gears via a simple button on the transmitter is perfectly replicated on the model to provide more control when driving off-road.
The radio-controlled model is mounted on a solid chassis with a central column for high torsion resistance, which also houses the central drive shaft and electrical wiring. The front and rear wheels have independent suspension , which allows you to obtain a long travel while taking up little space.
The Roc Hobby R&D team spent a considerable amount of time on the car's body to reproduce it in detail. You can see the Bosch horn and headlights as well as the Notek camouflage lights . Tires are the most common 5.25x16. Like the real car, the simulated wheels need to be secured with 5 screws, with a spare installed on the front hood, ready to use when needed. Remove the spare tire and the typical mid-cycle spare tire holder is easily accessible. The windshield can be lowered and fixed on the front bracket and the rearview mirror angle is adjustable like the real car. All four doors are opened by turning the door handle. The seats have comfortable soft foam cushions.
